  • The Nabokov Paper is an experiment in novel-reading. The project takes as its starting point a now famous class taught during the 1950s by Vladimir Nabokov at Cornell University, New York State, entitled Literature 311-312: Masters of European Fiction. Nabokov’s approach to teaching literary reading was notoriously idiosyncratic. Convinced that one must teach the books themselves, not ideas or generalities, Nabokov would make diagrams of the floor plans of fictional buildings, map the routes taken by characters through the spaces of the novel, and draw items of clothing or furniture, he would also propose to track the course of a single letter, offer a visual representation of a stylistic device, and uncover what he called the mysteries of literary structures. His methods are striking for the range of gestures they call for in the name of good reading. The published Lectures on Literature (New York: Harcourt, 1980) concludes with an appendix of sample exam questions. Responding to those questions some sixty years after the fact offers a means to explore what Nabokov’s take on how to read might have to teach us today: about the novel, about how reading works across practices and disciplines, and about the past, present and future forms of literary criticism.

  • Sarah Bodman made her first artist’s book tribute to Kurt Johannessen after Tanya Peixoto introduced her to his books at bookartbookshop.

    She produced ‘An Exercise for Kurt Johannessen’ in 2010, in tribute to his book ‘Exercises’. The titles of the 100 short stories she wrote and buried for her exercise, have since been taken up by BookArtObject an international book arts group, founded in Australia by Sara Bowen, with 84 artists currently making a book using one of Sarah’s short story titles.

    As it is now the 10th anniversary of bookartbookshop in February 2012, and the celebrations are based on theme of: x or what is to be done? Sarah asked Kurt Johannessen if she could select a further 10 (x) exercises from his artist’s book to carry out.

    The result is ‘X Exercises for Kurt Johannessen’ an image only artist’s book, published as a free download, DIY self-assembly book on 21.02.2012. The exercises can be identified through reading the texts in Kurt Johannessen’s ‘Exercises’. Sarah has made her book as a free PDF download for you to print out and assemble yourself, you will need 4 sheets of A4 paper and a stapler

Während er zu Beginn seiner Karriere der Pop Art und später der Konzeptkunst zugerechnet wurde, lässt sich heute im Rückblick feststellen, dass es eben auch eine Qualität seiner Arbeit ist, sich nie auf eine bestimmte Stilrichtung oder ein Medium festzulegen. So werden von ihm beispielsweise Künstlerbücher, Zeichnungen, Drucke, Fotografien sowie Malerei gleichberechtigt nebeneinander verwendet, und mitunter nutzte er so unkonventionelle Materialien wie Schießpulver, Fruchtsaft, Kaffee oder Sirup, um damit seine Zeichnungen und Drucke anzufertigen.
    Bei aller Divergenz der Stile und Mittel gibt es aber auch Konstanten im Werk von Ed Ruscha. Hierzu zählt die Verwendung von Schrift – sei es in Form von Druckmedien oder gemalt auf der Leinwand –, die sich von Beginn seiner Karriere an bis heute wie ein roter Faden prominent durch sein Œuvre zieht. Parallel zu seinem Kunststudium in Los Angeles hat Ed Ruscha als Schildermaler und für Werbeagenturen gearbeitet, für die er unter anderem Layoutmethoden und Drucktechniken studierte, die ihm später bei seinen eigenen frühen Publikationen nützlich wurden. Schon Anfang der 1960er Jahre entstanden seine heute legendären Künstlerbücher, in denen er beispielsweise Fotos der Tankstellen auf der Strecke von seinem Wohnort Los Angeles nach Oklahoma – wo seine Familie lebte – zeigt (Twentysix Gasoline Stations, 1963) oder alle Häuser des Sunset Boulevard vereint (Every Building on the Sunset Strip, 1965).

    The Persian script is turned into an ornament. Covering the white walls of the museums, the characters serve Forouhar as “paper” for her own text. The room becomes a “written room”. Whereas the white walls of the gallery room are raised to a universal norm and an unmarked instance, the Oriental ornament stands for difference or the deviating.
    The writing is also strange, if not alien, because it is illegible for Western visitors – as an “incomprehensible” text it becomes a pure ornament. In defying attempts by Western visitors to assign its meaning, the script remains locked into its irreducible pictorial graphicness and indissoluble representation. The meaning cannot be grasped. at best, the inscribed ping-pong balls, which cover the base of the installation, can be grasped in the tactual sense. The legibility is made even more difficult by the movement of the ping-pong balls, which due to their spherical form also offer no stable vertical or horizontal reading axes. they form new patterns over and over again, are always in motion, and become incoherently disjointed.
    Even if one has a command of Persian, the characters prove to be nothing more than word fragments and syllables, which are not subject to a linear order. The script ornamentation covers the whole room. Viewers entering the rooms are surrounded by patterns, forcing them to give up their sovereign, distanced standpoint.

  • Politics and the dance floor make for uneasy bedfellows, and it is this uneasiness that drives most of the work of Terre Thaemlitz, confronting head-on issues that are usually off limits in electronic music. Thaemlitz is a producer and DJ, also known under their monikers of DJ Sprinkles, Social Material, and K-S.H.E, among others. But they are also a writer, educator and activist of sorts, with very fluid notions of gender, switching continuously between male and female drag. Born in 1968, Terre Thaemlitz left the rigidly conservative and violently homophobic environment of their home state, Missouri, in the mid-1980s for New York. They became involved in the queer and transgender scenes both socially and musically at a time when house music was not a genre but simply the wide open sound of a specific social and political space. As New York’s underground queer music scenes dissolved under gentrification, Thaemlitz eventually relocated to Tokyo at the beginning of the ’00s. In a challenging interview with mono.kultur, Terre Thaemlitz talked about the politics of sexuality, his disillusion with the music industry, and why roller disco was so amazing. Visually, the issue is a dark affair, steeped in a dirty, gritty black. Printed on no less than six different paper stocks and juxtaposing several grids and graphic systems, it creates its own visual logic – only to disturb our most fundamental habits of reading and navigating a magazine by opening backwards, from right to left.

Sie trat gegen George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton und Ross Perot an. Myles Identität stand im harten Kontrast zu der ihrer wohlhabenden männlichen Kontrahenten: Myles ist eine lesbische Frau und Teil einer Community, die sowohl von Armut als auch AIDS betroffen ist.
    Ursprünglich sollte das Gedicht in einem LGBT-Magazin abgedruckt werden, stattdessen geriet es fotokopiert in Umlauf und wurde weiterverbreitet. Die "Vice" bezeichnete es als das erste "Pre-Internet-Meme".
